University of Melbourne defence research capabilities

Typically, university research capabilities are grouped by faculty. But industry partners don’t want to trawl through nine different websites to find information.

My task was to design and develop web content to represent the University of Melbourne’s institution-wide research capabilities relevant to the defence and national security sector.

I planned 11 pages of content, wrote copy and designed the page layouts with the University of Melbourne’s Squiz Matrix content management system. I also sourced defence-relevant images for select pages and managed their publishing permissions.

Developing the content

I first sorted existing capabilities of University of Melbourne researchers and faculties into nine themes.

Eight tiles for University of Melbourne research capabilities relevant to defence and national security: law and ethics; intelligence and misinformation; automation and computation; policy and peacebuilding; human health and performance; sensing and communications; national security.

I described the relevance of each capability to these themes (for example human health and performance), leveraging existing marketing content to design the pages. All capability text was reviewed by lead researchers to ensure it’s accurately represented.

The page has four content blocks, with a header showing a soldier hiking with his head down, an overview of the capabilities on the page, and two capabilities examples. I also drafted a defence research positioning statement which became ‘Our commitment to Australia’.

Finally, I designed a landing page for the defence and national security research capabilities.
